Black Cohosh: The female plant
Black cohosh is a plant of North America. The root extract of this herb seems to reduce hot flashes, mood swings, nervousness, irritability, anxiety, depression, insomnia and swelling associated with menopause. It is, therefore, an effective alternative to hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women. To confirm this, scientific studies are underway, although since 2001 the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has accepted it for six months short-term treatment of menopause. Also, the German Commission (Commission E) responsible for phytotherapy treatments has approved the use of black cohosh for more gynaecological problems, such as relief from premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea. Pregnant women or those with a history of breast cancer and liver dysfunction should avoid it. Dosages range from 20 to 200 mg/day.
